arienettelyn's Diaryland Diary

my rant about \"sellouts\" and how incubus are not them!

i have a friend named pacman. pacman doesn't like incubus. this isn't a problem, of course. there are tons of people who don't like incubus. and that's fine by me.

but pacman said that incubus are SELLOUTS. and he said they're MAINSTREAM.

and this has upset me so much that i feel the need to take up precious diary space....

i suppose i should start off by saying that i love incubus. they are probably in my top 5 all time favorite bands. i've seen them live 4 times, and plan on seeing them at least once this summer.

that being said....i have absolutely no problem with people disliking them, or any band i like. as long as theyre not rude about it, you know?

i'm pretty sure the word sellout can be applied to very few bands....i interpret selling out not to slightly changing your musical style but to letting a record company control you and convince you that you NEED to change your musical style and your image in order to make your music appeal to a wider audience.

he said he never liked incubus, but he had respect for them before because they didn't sound like anyone else. and they didn't. and that music was good. but they've progressed a lot musically since then. i doubt their intentions were to go "mainstream".

make yourself was a very different cd from science and their earlier stuff, but i think it showed a natural progression from the older stuff. all bands grow and change...if they don't it's really boring, and it doesn't show a lot of talent on the part of the band. it's important to explore and try different things. i doubt they thought make yourself would be a big hit like it was...

and with morning view, they evolved even more. i know you think it "blows", but the musicianship on that album should be appreciated if nothing else. i think the songwriting and the lyrics are really amazing.

incubus have changed so much since they started and i hope they stick around for a while so i can see how they continue to grow and change....because isn't that the exciting thing about music?

oh and as for the mainstream thing....yes theyre being played on regular radio, but no they really don't sound like that other stuff on there...you know all the bands with the singers that sound like eddie vedder/scott stapp or whatever...

at least they don't pretend to be something theyre not (like avril lavigne, the juliana theory, and any band that claims to be "punk"). they seem very comfortable to be who they are and nothing else. they don't have an "image". they do what they love and people love them for it. of course some people love them for other reasons (like their lead singer is the most fuckable guy on the planet or that drive song was really deep, man)

but you can't judge a band on it's fans....or "fans" i should say...

that was a very disorganized and stupid rant but what it comes down to is.....no artist ever deserves the comment that whatever craft they do "blows". it's kinda childish and stupid. art is what you make it, not everyone will like it, but just because you don't like it or don't understand it doesn't mean it's bad. art can't be bad. someone somewhere will find every piece of art to be beautiful, and maybe it will help them in some way...and how can that be bad?

i don't think that last thing made sense....oh well!
